Narrative
Narritive
A narrative can be when events are connected and placed together. This would usally take place in such films and mystery. A narrative is where a film is placed and set and also it is to place a mystery to the film. It is also to set a suspense or a scare to films.
Narrative could also be the person to being able to do a well sturctured story. If there is no story in a film, so for example a horror, or thriller, comedy film, science fiction, in any film if there is not a story plotted the audience will not want to watch it as they will not stay very intrested in what is going to happen.
Sound
Sound
There are two different types of sounds. Firstly digetic sound can be referred to the world of the text. You would here digetic sounds on things like the radio. The other way of sound is the non-digetic sound. This can be reffered to everything outside of the world of text. You would here this on things like a soundtrack, titles and subtitles. Also there is on and off screen sound. On screen sound is where the audience can see the source of the sound. Off screen sound is where the audience can not see the source of the sound. Off screen sound enables to extension of the digetic world.
Also parrelel sound matches the action as where a contrapuntal sounnd does not. Also a sound bridge will help to create a smooth transition between from one scene to another. For example in a thriller or a comedy genre, it will flow through each scene very smoothly so it will be relaxed. it bridges the two scenes.
Cinematography
cinematography
Cinematography are a variety of ways to film. These are:
Low angle
High angle
Medium shot
Close up
Extreme close up
Point of view
These are the majority of the ways in which when coming to film a thriller, you can use. These are very important as they play important roles in the way they work. For example a high angle shot is too make the character look very small, it gives the impression that they are timid, scared, short. As on the other hand many shots like the low angle shot makes the character look big, intimidated, not scared of anything. Close up shots in a thriller will show the expression on the characters face.
Lighting
Lighting
There are different ways that lighting can be used. Firstly the key lighting. It is the main lighting, which is also the strongest. It is very bright which could create a big effect on the person or object that they are focusing on. Back lighting is another use of lighting. This is to create light behind a person. There will be a big shadow infront of the person, which will mean that you will not be about to see the persons face. This could reate a scene in maybe a horror or thriller film.
The next is the three point lighting. This is used to do a light from the front, left and right. This means that the person standing in the middle stands out. This technique is used in films just to remove away the shadows. Underlighting is used so that a shadow can be made above the character which would be on the ceiling. It could also be used to create a shadow on the face which would also be used in genres such as horrors and thrillers.
Top lighting is used so that the light coming from above and then the audince can see a shadow on the floor. Low key lighting can be used when not all of the light is one. It creates a shadow on only half of the face which could be very mysterious in many ways. Lastly the high key lighting is a main lighting source as it is very bright and allows people too see everything. There will be no shadows in the scene as 4 lights are being used. This will be two from the front and two from the back.
Speed of editing
Speed of editing
The speed of editing is basically to make the audience to feel different emotions. If the audience feel relaxed and feel to watch the film normally the scenes of the films can last for a long period of time. For example genres that show this are comedies, science fiction and romance films.
On the other hand if the audience is feeling suspense, the scences should be quick and sharp allowing the audience to think what is happening. It leaves them shocked, scared and worried. This is because they do not know what is oging to happen to the other character of the film.
Some films, the speed of editing is used in trailers. We can see this as they pack so much information into a scene as quick as poosible to give the audience an understanding as to what the film is going to be about. Also in films there could be a really slow introduction so not only the audience but the people making the film can understand and have the acknowledge to what is happening and what we should be looking out for.
As shown, speed of editing is to show different moods, different feelings and different cultures of the film made. There are many moods created in a film such as suspense, pressure and abit of laughter. It can also create calm atmospheres and it can create a calm and relaxed film.
The Birds
The birds
The birds is another thriller that we watched in class. It is about a lady that falls in love with a man inside a bird shop. Love at first sight. He then left, but the lady eventually found out where the man lives. She had to hire a boat to go across the water as he lived on the opposite side to which she was standing. She then drove across the water, waiting for him to leave the house and head out to the barn. After he left the house she sneakily walked into his house, which then she had a love bird in her hand at this moment in time. She then left it there and run out of the house so she wouldn't get seen. She then jumped back on the boat and drove out of the water a bit then stopped and watched him walk into the house. After him seeing the bird he then dramtically walked outside and tried to find out who it was. He soon see it was the lady he met before in the shop so then he got in his car and chased after her as she was on the boat. After he got near her he suddenly see that a bird flew straight past her and hit her on the head. It started from there as when she went to the school she sat outside and listened to the pupils inside singing. She soon realised that behind her in the playing area was gathered a majority of black widowed birds. They gathered together, and she ran into the school to inform the teacher about the sitution. The teacher then told the children to run as soon as they get outside which they did. The birds then striked and started hitting and chasing down everyone. It then got to the dinner party for which the children were there again. The birds striked once again. It was a nightmare for the lady and man as they didn't know why it was happening. We as the audience had some idea that it was because of the lady that it was happening. It got to the end of the film when the lady and man was in there house. They heard banging from ouside and then started to hear the screetching from the birds. All of a sudden they all flew down the chimney which covered the house top to bottom. They then went outside to see all the birds sitting there normall.

Thriller genre
This year we are going to be focusing on one certain genre. That is going to be thrillers. There are many types of thrillers such as;
transcript, memento, and many action movies like taken two. A genre is a variety of films such as thrillers, horrors, comedy, science fiction, non fiction, scrips ect. There are many films such as Meet the Millers and inbetweeners which are classed as comedy films, where as Taken two, Karate kid are more of the thriller types as you don't know what is going to actually happen. Horror's such as Devils due, Insidious, Cabin in the woods are all known as to be scary but some actually aren't. For example some may give you a laugh, some might give you a fright and some might actually be based on a true story which makes it even more scary. We will be concentrating on thrillers over this year as during the end of the year we will be eventually making our own film of a thriller.

Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene
When applied to the cinema, mise-en-scene refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement—composition, acts, props, costumes, and lighting. The “mise-en-scène”, along with the cinematography and editing of a film, influence of a film in the eyes of its viewers. The various elements of design help express a film’s vision by generating a sense of time and space, as well as setting a mood, and sometimes suggesting a character’s state of mind. “Mise-en-scène” also includes the composition, which consists of the positioning and movement of actors, as well as objects, in the shot. These are all the areas overseen by the director. One of the most important people that collaborates with the director is the production designer. These two work closely to perfect all of the aspects of the “mise-en-scène” a considerable amount of time before the actual photography even begins.
Mise-en-scene is an important part in the filming industry as it makes the characters who they are. it is the costumes, what you think of them will be because what they have been giving to wear. Also in soaps such as Eastenders all of the characters wear make-up. This is because when they sweat and when they are acting and being filmed it makes them look good and fresh. They stand out in the series or film they have been filming for. Also where the film has been set is very important as it sets out what they film is going to be about. You always get a rough idea what it is going to be about as for example in a forest it will be about animals being in there and loads of fighting and farming as films such as in towns or cities in working industries many of the people/actors will look smart and booted up.
Style of editing
Style of Editing
Style of editing is how the shots are linked together. Also the term transition is known as the movement from one shot to the next.
Straight cut which is the transition which the shots are moving instantly from one scene to the next without attracting the audiences attention.Which means it is the most natural transition.
Dissolve is when the audience are able to see both shots on the screen at the mid point of the dissolve. Which gives a smooth touch to the scenes and prepares the audience for the next. This may be used when the film maker wants to show a connection between two characters , places or objects.
Fade is a gradual darkening or lightening of an image until it becomes black or white. However one shot only fades when a black or white screen can be seen which can be shown for time passing . This also indicates the end of a particular section of time within the narratives.
Source code
Source code

US Army pilot captain Colter Stevens was last on a mission in Afghanistan, and he wakes up on a train to Chicago. He was appeared to be seen as a school teacher. As he comes to grip, the train he was on exploded and killed everyone that was on it. After he was sent back to the source code, which he then attempts to learn the bombers identity. He tried to warn the people and flee with the lady, yet escaping the explosion. Stevens catches the bomber, who left his wallet behind to fake his own death. He then gets off the last stop which was before chicago. On his run he both killed Stevens and the lady, and drives away in his white van. Stevens remembered the number on the van and the direction, so which they could catch the man who is bombing the trains and places around the area. Stevens wanted to try one more time to try to save everyones lives as he let many people die before due to the bombing. Stevens is then sent back into the source code where he then disarms the bomb., and handcuffs the other man who has been bombingh to a handrail inside the train.
The next day, the timeline goodwin arrived for work and recieved an email from stevens. The news got told to him that the failed bomber Frost on the Chigago train was caught. He then told everyone that everything is going to be okay and no body else is going to get killed or hurt. They should not be threatened.
No country for old men
No country for old men

While being ready to hunt, the man finds a truck which was full of dead people, which only one man was still allive. There was loads of drugs such as heroin in the trucks. The man after that then found two million dollars, which he then later that day took home with him. After that night he then returned that night to bring drink to the one man who was still alive in that truck. Lastly the man tries to get rid of his pursuers as the man flips the coin for human lives. The other man strips down the american crime and expands on it and its concerns themes as ancient as the bible.
Continuity editing
Continuity editing
Continuity editing maintains a continuous narrative footage in a chronological order which is done in several ways so it can be processed easily foward in a realistic way. This is done as the eye line match will be cut which will be between the two shots as which the character was looking at.
The next one is the match on action. This cuts two alternitive shots so one character is in one place, but as soon as the second shot takes place it will be changed to the other character who is in another position when the shot gets taken. This is a good way to film for the films as it does not break the continuouty editing.
Lastly the 10 degree rule is where two characters in the same scene should always have the same relationship as each others. If the camera crosses over the two axis it is called the cross eye action which is another good and easy way to film.
Graphic match is a good way to edit when wanting to relate two dissconnected scenes in which it helps establish a clear footage.
